Peppers in the Straw

Hi Folks,

As I promised a week or so ago, I have moved on to the next part of the “Straw Bale Experiment” and planted bell peppers in the second one.

I didn’t go through the whole “Step-By-Step” that I did with the tomatoes, but it is the same process.

  1. Open a hole in the straw.
  2. Fill it with a good quality potting soil.
  3. Plant the pepper. (When I was planting tomatoes I told you to plant them deep so more roots would develop. Plant peppers at the same depth that they were in the pots.)

An interesting thing is happening that I didn’t anticipate. Apparently there were wheat seeds in the straw that are now sprouting. You can see them coming up throughout the straw. (Those green things.) One of the advantages of planting in straw was that you wouldn’t need to weed.) I’ll let the sprouts get a bit bigger before I pull them out.

Incidentally, here is a picture of the whole bed that the straw is in.

As you can see some of the plants are much farther ahead then the ones in the straw bales. That is because I’ve been known to procrastinate when I start a new project. Don’t worry, in a couple of more weeks you won’t be able to tell the difference between the ones in the garden and the ones in the straw.

Almost Blue

It’s July 8th and the Blueberries are beginning to turn blue. The Robins would be smacking their lips (If they had any.) so I’ve netted the bushes.

Mid-June in Loudonville, Ohio

Hi Folks,

The last few months have been extremely busy, but not very productive. Hopefully I believe that I am now moving into a time of “Not so Busy–More Productive”. It’s mid-June and I thought that I would show you where my homestead is at the moment.

1Backyard 2016

This is the path leading to my back porch. The “Stella-D’Oro” day-lilies are just beginning to bloom, and the goldfish definitely survived the winter. They are eating me out of house and home.

1Fish Pond 2016

There are somewhere between 20 and 25 of them in the pond. I suspect that the waterlilies will be blooming within a week or two.

The roses are doing well along the path to the front of the house.

1Garden Path 2016

and best of all the tomatoes are beginning to set fruit. I tried a couple of “Brandywine” heritage tomatoes to see how they will do and some “Sweet Million” cherry tomatoes right along the path so that the Grand-kids can sample them on the way into the house.

Sugar Snap Peas

Hi Folks,

You may remember that I mentioned planting some Sugar Snap peas in a previous Newsletter. If you do I must tell you that it was not a roaring success. The germination was poor, and although I am still picking, I am not optimistic about the overall yield. Here is the first picking.

snap peas

Actually, they did make a great snack for my husband and I. We ate them raw as we sat on the swing and watched a great sunset.

If you are going to eat Sugar Snaps, remember to remove the strings.

There is one of these running down each side of the pea. Just pinch off the end and pull. the string will come out easily. remember there is one on each side of the pea so pull off each end.

Grandma Judy’s Grilled Asparagus

asparagus 3

Hi Folks,

The asparagus bed  is running at full speed right now. I’ve been using it in every recipe I can think of, but the simplest and the all-time favorite of my oldest grandson Logan, is grilled.

Just brush on some olive oil, salt to taste and place on a hot grill. In 3 to 6 minutes you’ll have a great side to go with the rest of your meal.

Hey Look What I Got!!!!!!

Asparagas2015Later today these little beauties will be joining some onions, and some baby peas in a “Spring Omelet”.

It’s easy to do. Just sauté in olive oil, starting with the onions sprinkled with a crushed chicken bouillon cube. When the onions are translucent, add the asparagus, cut into 1 inch pieces, the frozen peas and continue to sauté until the asparagus is a bright green, (Don’t over-cook) then add the eggs. I stir in 5 eggs for my husband and I.

If you aren’t growing asparagus already, set aside a 2 to 3 foot wide space that you won’t need to disturb for years, mix in as much compost as you can afford, (sphagnum moss will do, but add some granulated lime to balance the pH.). Then plant your choice of asparagus plants about a foot apart in a single row right down the middle of your bed. (The ones pictured are “Purple Passion”. These turn green when cooked.)

The most important part of locating your asparagus bed is to remember that the plants will grow to heights of 6 to 8 feet after your done harvesting the spears, and that it will not be until the third year after planting that you will be able to harvest the crop. This is why it’s “Location, Location, Location”. I have my bed against a picket fence at the edge of the property.

It’s worth the wait! Once the bed has matured, I can harvest spears for about 6 weeks until I let the plants grow.
Just a “Heads-Up”. This Blog, my website, and my Facebook, are focused on the nutritional benefits of Juice Plus+ and it’s products, because I believe that everyone, young and old, will benefit from them. However, I have also gathered some random bits of knowledge in my lifetime that I’ll be sharing with you.

This knowledge will probably run the gamut from childcare, to gardening, to cooking, to observing nature, to just plain useless information. However, for the most part, I think that you will find most of it, information that you can use in your everyday life.

If you would like to be sure that you don’t miss any of it, there is a “Thank You for Following My Blog” link in the right-hand column. Click on it, and it will ask you for your name, (You can use any name you like.) and your e-mail address. Fill it in and submit it, and every time I Post something on the “Blog” you’ll be notified.

Not only the Spring flowers, but when my husband and I were walking on Sunday, we heard and saw the Red-Winged Blackbird scouts that had just arrived from the south. If the Red-Wings are back, can the Florida “Snow Birds” be far behind?????

If things go as planned, I’ll be planting peas in the garden tomorrow. “Saint Patrick’s Day”.
