Sugar Snap Peas

Hi Folks,

You may remember that I mentioned planting some Sugar Snap peas in a previous Newsletter. If you do I must tell you that it was not a roaring success. The germination was poor, and although I am still picking, I am not optimistic about the overall yield. Here is the first picking.

Actually, they did make a great snack for my husband and I. We ate them raw as we sat on the swing and watched a great sunset.

If you are going to eat Sugar Snaps, remember to remove the strings.

There is one of these running down each side of the pea. Just pinch off the end and pull. the string will come out easily. remember there is one on each side of the pea so pull off each end.

Grandma Judy’s Grilled Asparagus

Hi Folks,

The asparagus bed  is running at full speed right now. I’ve been using it in every recipe I can think of, but the simplest and the all-time favorite of my oldest grandson Logan, is grilled.

Just brush on some olive oil, salt to taste and place on a hot grill. In 3 to 6 minutes you’ll have a great side to go with the rest of your meal.

Hey Look What I Got!!!!!!

Asparagas2015Later today these little beauties will be joining some onions, and some baby peas in a “Spring Omelet”.

It’s easy to do. Just sauté in olive oil, starting with the onions sprinkled with a crushed chicken bouillon cube. When the onions are translucent, add the asparagus, cut into 1 inch pieces, the frozen peas and continue to sauté until the asparagus is a bright green, (Don’t over-cook) then add the eggs. I stir in 5 eggs for my husband and I.

If you aren’t growing asparagus already, set aside a 2 to 3 foot wide space that you won’t need to disturb for years, mix in as much compost as you can afford, (sphagnum moss will do, but add some granulated lime to balance the pH.). Then plant your choice of asparagus plants about a foot apart in a single row right down the middle of your bed. (The ones pictured are “Purple Passion”. These turn green when cooked.)

The most important part of locating your asparagus bed is to remember that the plants will grow to heights of 6 to 8 feet after your done harvesting the spears, and that it will not be until the third year after planting that you will be able to harvest the crop. This is why it’s “Location, Location, Location”. I have my bed against a picket fence at the edge of the property.

It’s worth the wait! Once the bed has matured, I can harvest spears for about 6 weeks until I let the plants grow.

Not only the Spring flowers, but when my husband and I were walking on Sunday, we heard and saw the Red-Winged Blackbird scouts that had just arrived from the south. If the Red-Wings are back, can the Florida “Snow Birds” be far behind?????

If things go as planned, I’ll be planting peas in the garden tomorrow. “Saint Patrick’s Day”.

This is my first “Newsletter”

Good Morning Folks,

I have been identified in many ways throughout my lifetime; however, the way I prefer is “Grandma Judy”. I have earned this title by having five children of my own, and they have presented me with eleven grandchildren. (So Far) My Children and Grandchildren have taught me as much, as hopefully I have taught them.

Now that you know about all of that, as “Grandma Judy”, I’m at the threshold of a new adventure in my life. I just became a new distributor for Juice Plus+, and although I’m excited about the products that Juice Plus+ offers, this Newsletter will follow a few other themes as well. I’m inviting you to join me in the fun.

1. Gardening: I love gardening and landscaping from flowers to veggies, and over the years I’ve learned a few things. “What to do and when”, and probably just as many “What not to do and why not”.

2. Recipes: Over the years, I have cooked a lot of meals for the family, and come up with a lot of those “Special Dishes for Carry-ins”. There are a few recipes that will remain secret, but most of them I’ll share with you.

3. Household Tips: I have found a few things that will make those “Household Chores” a bit easier, or if not easier at least a little more efficient.

4. Raising Kids: One thing I have learned about kids over the years is that no two of them are the same, and that if you ever think you have got one figured out,—-you haven’t. However, I have had a lot of special times, along with a few heartbreaks, that if I share them with you, maybe it will help you in your next issue.

The most important thing that I have learned is that the “Simplest Solution” is generally the best.” Remember the simplest; not the easiest, not the fastest, not the most convenient.

Most of us wish for a “Long and Healthy Life”. Above all else, this is the one wish that will give us the most fulfillment. However, despite our best intentions, we sometimes find that day-to-day commitments will not allow us to do what we know that we should.

We sometimes find that although we know that we should have had orange juice for Breakfast, a serving of vegetables along with the sandwich at Lunch, or perhaps a serving of fruit at Dinner instead of the “Super-Sized” serving of fries, we are not always in full control of our eating habits.
